IGNOU Plans to Set Up 5,000 Digital Learning Centres

In a move to lay emphasis on digital learning, Indira Gandhi National Open University is planning to set up 5,000 digital learning centres. As per the plan, directors of the regional centres will be given responsibility to maintain this facility.

Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, Mr. Ravindra Kumar revealed that the government has been successful in creating communication networks like broadband facilities to over 10 lakh villages across the country. Learners in rural or remote areas can also access digital learning with the help of these communication networks.

The Vice Chancellor further revealed that the varsity would offer distance learning programmes in North Eastern states through NECIRC or North East Council of IGNOU Regional Centres. Broadband connectivity is a major advantage for the varsity to run digital learning. Learners located in remote areas can access the digital materials through this initiative.

IGNOU has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National E-Governance division that comes under Ministry of Information Technology. The purpose of the MoU is to provide e-governance materials that are prepared under Digital India initiative.

Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU also mentioned that the varsity is taking steps to face the challenge of poor internet connectivity in North Eastern states. For this purpose, the varsity has revived additional facility of Swayam Prabha and Gyan Darshan to access the remotest part of the region.

Recently, IGNOU also announced that it would offer an online course on Human Rights for police personnel apart from updating the existing course.

The deadline for completing the application process for the Master’s programmes offered by the varsity is August 18, 2017.
