IGNOU Launches Skill Based Health Programmes
IGNOU Launches Skill Based Health Programmes to increase the number of trained health care personnel in the healthcare sector. Each of the programmes will have about 30 hours of theory teaching or interaction at the Study Centers of IGNOU.
School of Health Sciences of IGNOU is introducing four new skill-based health programmes. The aim of the courses is to increase the number of trained health care personnel in the healthcare sector. The varsity has come up with a skill training cell to implement and certify the skill-based health courses.
The IGNOU skill-based health programmes will be offered through the medium of nation-wide support services framework. To facilitate these courses, IGNOU has come up with a supervision network at both the state and district level in association with MOHFW.
IGNOU Skill- Based Health Programmes
IGNOU has launched four skill-based health programmes to increase the number of trained professionals in the healthcare sector of the country and to provide quality care to the patients. The four new courses introduced by IGNOU, School of Health Sciences are as follows: -
Certificate in General Duty Assistance (CGDA)
CGDA is a short-term skill-based training programme. The main aim is to impart training to the candidates so that they can assist nurses and doctors in the healthcare sector. The aim is to provide quality care to the patients. The duration of the course is six months and the maximum time provided to the candidates to complete the course is two years.
Certificate in Geriatric Care Assistance (CGCA)
The CGCA course will train candidates to provide care to old age patients. The aim of the course is to develop a pool of trained workforce who can provide assistance and support to the elderly. These trained professionals will be known as Patient Care Assistants, Elderly Care Attendants.

Certificate in Phlebotomy Assistance (CPHA)
The IGNOU CPHA programme will impart training to provide assistance in the medical laboratory as a pathologist or as a laboratory technologist. It will impart the skill necessary to draw quality samples in hospitals, ways and methods to store the same.
Certificate in Home Health Assistance (CHHA)
The CHHA programme will train the pool of workforce to provide assistance to the patients at home (personal care). They will be required to assist the patient at home and to monitors the patient's condition.

The study material for the IGNOU Skill- Based Health Programmes are developed by SOHS. It will include audio-visual study material, textbooks, practical manual, assignments and others. The duration of each of the health care programme at IGNOU will be of 30-80 hours depending on the hands-on training at medical colleges.
