IIITDM Kurnool Can Now Award Degrees, Lok Sabha Passes Bill
- IIITDM can now award degrees to the students.
- It has further been declared as an Institute of National Importance.

On July 26, 2017, the Lok Sabha has passed a Bill to declare IIITDM or Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing located in Kurnool as a centre of national importance. The Bill includes IIITDM in the principal act along with other IITs. IIITDM can now award degrees to the students. It has further been declared as an Institute of National Importance. The Union Cabinet approved the same legislation in February 2017. IIITDM will be the fifth centrally funded institute in a row with this tag.
Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister welcomed the suggestions made by the members on IIIT Bill 2017. On this occasion, the minister revealed that the employability of students passing out from IIITs has been excellent. However, it is time to improve these IIITs further by imparting skill oriented training to students. Javadekar further indicated that the professionals must play a crucial role in understanding the expectations and behaviour of the customers which will ultimately better their career prospects.

Javadekar was also confident of achieving a Gross Enrolment Ration (GER) of 30% by 2020.
Expressing his opinion on IIIT Bill 2017, Souguta Ray of TMC indicated that there should be a national level curriculum for Information Technology (IT) education. Standardisation in education is possible only if all the states follow the uniform curriculum with regard to IT education.
Sanjay Jaiswal of BJP urged the government to set up similar kind of institutes in Bihar, specifically in Champaran. Gopal Shetty of BJP advised the government to ensure quick implementation of the Bill as it has been passed in the Parliament.
