IIM Alumni Respond on IIM Nagpur’s Poor Placements

Finally, alumni of Indian Institutes of Management and management experts responded to the poor placements of Indian Institute of Management, Nagpur. The alumni of IIM are of the opinion that poor performance is just a temporary scenario, and the performance will improve in a couple of years. However, management experts say that lack of industrialisation in Vidarbha region, lack of permanent campus and faculty are some of the major reasons for poor performance in placements.

The placement percentage of all IIMs is not up to the mark. Recently, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development directed all the new IIMs to submit data on the number of students placed in the final placements, and salary packages offered.

One of the alumni of IIM, Mr. Prakash Shesh expressed that it takes time for any new institute to settle down. However, IIM Nagpur has performed well in placements. Almost all the newer IIMs might face some challenges in the initial stages, and there is no point worrying about it, he added.

Mr. Prakash Javadekar also indicated that most of the companies know about the IIM’s brand equity. They keep a watch on the performance of new IIMs and visit the institutes according to it. He further pointed that Vidarbha region does not have much industrialisation like Mumbai and Pune. However, IIM Nagpur managed to place 50% of students. Therefore, it is not the right time to blame the institute for poor placements, he said.

Sanjay Arora, other alumni expressed that even though IIM Nagpur does not have a permanent campus and faculty, 50% students of the first batch bagged jobs, which is commendable. Other management experts said that it might take a couple of years for IIM Nagpur to achieve 100% placements.
