IIM Calcutta launches industrial decarbonization and green economy initiative
On 19th May, IIM Calcutta stated that the BRIDGE initiative will be conducted for training programmes for NTPC, Coal India and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in the days to come.
According to a statement from the Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta on 19th May, the B-school's BRIDGE initiative will conduct training programmes for NTPC, Coal India and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in the days to come. National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) conducted the first BRIDGE training course shortly after it was launched in April.
The BRIDGE initiative has three main objectives interconnected with one another:
- Contribute to the development of a knowledge base on carbon transitions that are effective and just.
- Public and private energy firm executives should be trained on evolving best practices for transition in India and other developing nations.
- Educate postgraduate students about low carbon transition finance and strategy, as well as encourage research on the subject.

As part of the first objective, BRIDGE publishes an annual report on pathways to low carbon technology in India and developing countries. All the reports contain clear policy recommendations. The objectives of the report are to create a research agenda for the development of pathways to low carbon industrial transitions and to create low carbon knowledge support systems to facilitate these transitions. In a way, it can be considered a single, complete resource bank for anyone interested in extensive and up-to-date information about low carbon transition for the country's industry, both in terms of theory and its applications.
On 16th and 17th May, IIM Calcutta's Joka campus hosted a two-day round table discussion to begin the report preparation. The discussion was attended by more than 30 contributors from more than 20 organisations. The first annual report will be released in March 2023.

The director of IIM Calcutta, Uttam Sarkar, discussed climate change at the roundtable's inauguration. The concern over climate change led IIM Calcutta to contribute to decarbonization. During the closing remarks, CDEP convenor Runa Sarkar commented that both the depth and breadth of the discussions, as well as the passion with which they were presented, were astounding.
The CDEP has collaborated with Stichting Social Enterprise Development (SED), Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), and International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for the BRIDGE initiative.
