IIM Global Alumni Network Demands Reservation for SC, ST, OBC Faculty

The alumni group of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), through a petition letter, has demanded the implementation of reservation policy be given absolute under-representation of SC, ST and OBC categories in the premier management institutes.

In their petition to the President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Global IIM Alumni Network pointed that not giving due representation to the reserved categories in the management colleges is a mere violation of the constitutional provisions. The alumni network has also opposed the IIM Bill 2017 which was passed by Lok Sabha recently as it would further enable autonomy powers of the top management institutes of the country.

The alumni network further claimed that the IIMs are not yet ready for complete autonomy due to such acute shortcomings. They further proposed several amendments to the IIM Bill which shall be incorporated in subsequent phases to overcome the limitations.

Further elaborating their stand, the alumni network also submitted the data on the number of faculty members at IIMs while pointing out that out of the 512 faculty members, only 13 OBC and 2 SC category members are hired across top 10 IIMs in the country.

They are of the opinion that if not for all programmes such as FPM, Executive MBA etc, these policies shall at least be incorporated in context to the PGP programme offered by the IIMs.

With the petition they have sent, the Global IIM Alumni Network has sought the intervention of the President and Prime Minister so that corrective steps can be taken and the proposed amendments to the current Bill are considered.

IIM Bill 2017 was passed in Lok Sabha during the monsoon session of the Parliament and it is yet to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
