IIT Foundation for Accreditation to Accredit Technical Institutes in India
Technical Institutes in India will no longer be accredited by the NBA and the role will be taken over by a new company. IIT Foundation for Accreditation and Assessment (IFAA) will be taking over from now on.
Technical Institutes in the country will no longer be accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the role will be taken over by a new company that is IIT Foundation for Accreditation and Assessment (IFAA).
Addressing the gathering at the 4th World Summit of Accreditation, Union HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar revealed that IITs and IIMs would be roped in for the speedy assessment and accreditation of higher learning institutes in India. Even though NAAC and NBA grant accreditation to educational institutes, they are not enough to accredit all the higher learning institutes in India. At present, only 15% of higher educational institutes in India are accredited, he pointed out.

Technical Institutes in India will no longer be accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. IIT Foundation for Accreditation and Assessment will take over the role. The new company has been established recently and the founding partners are IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras.

Javadekar further stated that the ministry had asked IIMs and IITs to come together and create an agency so that the ministry can expedite the process of accreditation. As per the latest guidelines, the accreditation of higher education institutes in India will be based on ‘Learning Outcomes’ and quality of education. In August 2018, UGC approved a proposal to allow more accreditation agencies to enhance the existing capacity, he added.
As per the new rules, the accreditation agencies will give 80% weightage to peer reviews and learning outcomes. The physical verification of campuses and infrastructure can be done with the help of satellites.

Higher Education Secretary, Mr. Subramanyam revealed that the higher learning institutes would only survive if they maintain the quality of education. Institutes that fail to do so will be out of business, he clarified.
