IIMC Partners with TikTok to Train Students on Online Safety
IIMC has partnered with TikTok to conduct workshops in order to train aspiring media professionals about online security. The workshops have commenced from 26th August 2019 in all the campuses of IIMC.
The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), which is one of the best journalism and mass media colleges of India, has entered a partnership with the mobile application TikTok. Under this alliance, the institute will provide professional training to budding media professionals on all the existing challenges that are faced by the industry because of the evolution of the social media landscape in the country.
This alliance will enable IIMC and TikTok to organise a series of workshops with the professors and students of IIMC across all of its six campuses in the country. The workshops have already commenced from 26th August 2019, Monday. These workshops will be delivered and implemented via the media platform ‘Youth ki Awaaz’.
Objectives of IIMC Collaboration with TikTok
The workshops conducted by IIMC and TikTok will feature a curriculum that will include the insights and learning given and shared by thought leaders from internet-based companies, new media, and the educational institutional community. Some of the key themes that they will address are given below.
Mobilising an active and engaged community of aspiring media professionals who are informed and aware of cybersecurity and ways to combat all misinformation given on the internet.
- Empowering millennials and sensitising them about the safe and responsible use of the internet.
- Educating the community about their role in creating a positive and safe online environment.

This initiative started by TikTok and IIMC is a part of the ongoing campaign of TikTok called #WaitASecToReflect. This campaign aims at promoting responsible online conduct among the digital citizens of India. Social media has become a vital part of everyone’s day-to-day life ever since it has become the preferred medium for people to socialise and connect. Due to its increasing popularity and usage, social media often compromises on information accuracy and lack of control on content. This is the primary reason as to why IIMC has undertaken this initiative.
The Director-General of IIMC, K. S. Dhatwalia, commented on the need of tying up with TikTok and said that the way Indian consume information and news is changing rapidly with internet access increasing every day. He said that as the media landscape evolves, it brings the need to educate and equip all aspiring media professionals about the roles they have as enablers of positive impact on the society. This academic partnership will help in training the next generation of media professionals about the nuances of consumption of news and information on social media and digital platforms.
