IIMC to Apply for Deemed University Status to UGC

IIMC has finally received a go-ahead from the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry to apply for a deemed university status. This change of status will allow the institute to award degrees instead of diplomas to its students. Changing of status will also be a good news for students wanting to pursue a career while opting for mass communication as a part of civil services and other academic subjects.

Currently, IIMC is an autonomous institute and after University Grants Commission (UGC) permits, Indian Institute of Mass Communication will receive the status of deemed university.

A change in status will be of great help for the institute as well as the students. After the status of a deemed university, IIMC will no longer have to seek permission regarding elevation. After a change in status, the institute will be allowed to provide its students with degrees. With a degree in hand, now the students will be able to study MPhil in media studies also.

Moreover, what’s new is that the diploma will be extended to two years. All those students who pursue the course for one year, will beawarded with diplomas and all those students who pursue the course for two years, will be awarded will be handed a post graduate degree. Also, the studies in journalism will be divided in two parts. In year 1, students will learn the basics of media studies and in the second year, they will be offered a specialisation in media studies.
