IIMs Agree to Increase Student Intake for Postgraduate Programmes
Currently, a total number of 10,000 students are pursuing PGP courses across 19 IIMs.
Indian Institutes of Management have agreed to increase the intake for postgraduate programmes (PGP) over the next few years. The announcement was made by HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar after a meeting with IIM directors on September 22, 2016. Even though the decision was made, the directors neither have clarity on the proposed intake nor a deadline for the proposed expansion.

One of the directors of IIM said that each and every IIM has to approach the government separately with an expansion plan specifying the number of seats which they can afford to increase and the timeline to achieve the same. Currently, a total number of 10,000 students are pursuing PGP courses across 19 IIMs.

He also mentioned that the directors have asked whether the government would allot funds for the development of infrastructure at par with the increase in intake. However, the government did not give clarity on the same. He pointed out that some of the oldest IIMs of the country like IIM Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Calcutta, Bangalore and Indore have not requested even a penny from the government in the current financial year.
