IISc Alumnus Awarded Kalam Fellowship at US Varsity

Veena Subramanian, a Master’s student from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has won the second Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Post Graduate Fellowship from the University of South Florida.

She has been awarded the fellowship for her significant contribution to the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology at the University of South Florida. Dr. Rojer Bindley, Vice President at the University indicated that the exceptional academic credentials of Veena and her passion towards research exemplify all that embodies a Kalam Fellow.

Veena hails from Kottayam in Kerala. She completed her UG degree in Biotech Engineering from Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu. Post that, she completed her graduation or master’s degree in Cell Biology from IISc Bangalore.

Veena Subramanian will use the benefits of the premier Ph.D. programme at the University of South Florida to make a significant impact in the ageing mechanism and genome technology which will further enhance the understanding of issues that are faced by the elderly. She will further extend her support to researchers in finding out solutions to their pressing needs.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Post Graduate Fellowship was instituted in the year 2015 to honour the former President of India, who visited the University of South Florida in 2012. The Fellowship aims at helping Indian students like Veena Subramanian to take up Ph.D. in Specified Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, also known as the SGEM programme. The recipients will be provided with a four-year tuition waiver along with $18,000 (Rs. 11,52,000) stipend per annum.

The first recipient of this fellowship was an alumnus from IIT Bombay.
