IIT Bhubaneswar’s scholars studying climate science are researching about coastal inundation in order to develop a Land-Ocean-Atmospheric Modelling System. This system will predict extreme weather events, said U C Mohanty, Professor of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences at the institute.

Addressing the gathering at the four-day National Symposium on Tropical Meteorology (TROPMET-2016) at SOA University, the professor also stated that the coastal states in India have been severely affected by extreme weather conditions, climate change and global warming.

Prof. Mohanty also said that IIT-Bhubaneswar has joined hands with US-based scientists to develop a storm-detecting model. He further added that this model will provide more accurate predictions regarding coastal inundation that will help prevent life and property. This is an important development as climate change has been altering the rainfall pattern.

The sea level has also been rising due to global warming. Mohanty said that a state like Orissa has been taken up for research as the storm surge on the southern coastline of Orissa from Ganjam district to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh is expected to be of 2-3 meters. Storms of this intensity can be very destructive therefore they need to be accurately predicted.
