IIT Bombay Aims to Promote Nationalism by Picking Khadi as Convocation Robe

IIT-B or Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has chosen the Hindu national traditional white piece of cloth or stole - Khadi, to be used as a convocation robe during the graduation ceremony of its outgoing batch.

This will not only help evoke a feeling of nationalism among the students but will also ensure that Khadi continues to gain ground in every sphere of life.

It is revealed that IIT Bombay has ordered for more than 3,000 angavastrams made of honeycomb towel cotton Khadi. The students will be wearing and draping the piece of cloth to mark the occasion.

To revive the traditional textile industry, PM Narendra Modi has repeatedly come up to talk about increasing the use of the traditional fabric, especially through the Mann Ki Baat monthly radio address. However, on the contrary, it is believed that the government is trying to introduce Hindu elements in top institutions as a part of its cultural agenda.

In 2015, UGC or the University Grants Commission also issued a circular to all the universities and affiliated colleges to pick handloom for ceremonial dresses at the time of special occasions. Directed by the same, Gujarat Technological University, made Khadi compulsory for its convocation earlier this year.
