During the Medical Device Innovation Camp, which is hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay this year, a contemporary and economical device to screen patients with diabetic foot neuropathy conditions had been launched. Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar launched the product, which has been the brain-child of Nishant Kathpal.

Nishant Kathpal, an alumnus from the Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Bombay, stated that his product is unlike other diabetic screening devices. He stated that the product is based on the concept of tissue stiffness, which is an original concept. He added that the device will help in screening the patient at a much faster pace while also being reliable. This will result in coming up with better and effective treatment and care.

Sources state that the IIT Bombay has provided Intellectual Property of the Diabetic Foot Screener to a start-up established by Nishant, Ayati Devices. The start-up has been launched in SINE, which is a business incubator of IIT Bombay. Sources also state that the licensing agreement had been signed at the launch of the programme, consequently handed over to Nishant.

A team of clinicians from MGM Institute of Health Sciences Navi Mumbai, headed by Dr Rajani Mullerpatan has been working with the Biomedical Engineering and Technology (incubation) Centre (BETiC) over the last four years in developing the device.

At the event, Prof B Ravi, founder of BETiC announced another achievement, stating that the team had applied to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in order to understand the regulatory pathway of the device. He announced that the CDSCO has termed the device a non-notified device. He added that the tag will now allow a clear path for the production and distribution of the device after the completion of the clinical studies.

Dr. Rupesh Ghyar, SEO of BETiC stated the advantages of using the diabetic foot neuropathy screener. As per his statement, 10% of the total patients with prolonged diabetes suffer from a diabetic foot condition, which leads to the formation of foot ulcers, which inevitably lead to amputations. He further added that the device will be useful in identifying patients who may suffer from the disease and thus take the necessary precautionary steps to avoid foot amputations.
