IIT Bombay Decides to Implement Fellowship Fee Hike
The IIT Bombay took 6 months to implement the policy directed by the central government on Stipend Hike for the research scholars. The institute researchers have accused the authorities of negligence.
The Indian Institue of Technology - IIT Bombay has finally decided to implement the Stipend Hike Proposal which came from the Central Government 6 months ago. The Deputy Director of IIT Bombay, Mr Prasanna Majumdar has said that the disbursal of the hiked stipend will be given from August in an E-Mail which was sent to the Postgraduate (PG) students of the institute. The e-mail has also promised arrears to be given to the research scholars between January to July 2020.
The Central governmental Department of Science and Technology (DST) announced a 24% to 35% increase on January 2019 in emoluments given under various fellowships for Scientific researches. The hike is delayed in IIT Bombay as some officials were unsure if the Hike is applicable to Teaching Assistantship (TA) type of fellowships.
The IIT Bombay offers scholarships of two types which are, Research Assistantship (RA), where the scholars conduct research assignment as a part of their course and another type is previously mentioned Teaching Assistantship (TA) where the institute requires them to teach juniors under their supervision. A lot of the postgraduate (PG) students at IIT-Bombay opt for TA type of fellowship.
Earlier in July 2019, the Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) issued an Office Memorandum clarifying that the fellowship hike is equally applicable to all Ministry of HRD funded research and development programmes inclusive of academic programmes.
