IIT Bombay and Konkan Railway Sign MoU to Strengthen Tunnel Technology Institute
- The collaboration between IIT Bombay and GFITT is unique and will enhance the performance of both the institutes.
- IIT Bombay will provide technical support to Konkan Railway for developing tunnel and underground structure technologies.
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Konkan Railway have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen Konkan Railway’s George Fernandes Institute of Tunnel Technology (GFITT), located in Goa. Through this collaboration, IIT Bombay will focus on transforming the institute into a world-class centre of knowledge in underground and tunnel structure technologies. Director of IIT Bombay, Professor D.V. Khakhar and Chairman of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, Mr. Sanjay Gupta have signed the MoU on December 19, 2017.
IIT Bombay will provide all the necessary technical support to Konkan Railway for developing tunnel and underground structure technologies. Through this tie-up, the postgraduate and undergraduate scholars of IIT Bombay will gain practical training and experience in the R & D (Research and Development) programmes in tunnelling and underground spaces.

The collaboration between IIT Bombay and GFITT is unique, and first of its kind in India. Such unique collaborations will boost the global rankings of the premier institute. The TechFest of IIT Bombay for the year 2017 is all set to begin next week, i.e., from December 29 to December 31, 2017. This year, IIT Bombay’s TechFest will focus on finding digital solutions to different development issues. For this purpose, the premier institute is organising a competition called ‘Ideate’ during the fest.
