IIT Bombay Creates Robotic Boat to Help India Post in Sorting Applications
IIT Bombay will be offering support to the India Post’s District Philatelic Exhibition Mumbaipex 2019, which will be hosted by the GPO at Mumbai. They will also be displaying a robotic boat which will help in easily sorting out applications at India Post.
In a new venture for the institute, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay will be extending support to the General Post Office (GPO) of India Post, Mumbai, in hosting the District Philatelic Exhibition Mumbaipex 2019. They will also be organising a technology exhibit to display the advantages of effectively using technology to sort applications at India Post.
The Design Innovation Centre (DIC) and the e-yantra Lab, at IIT Bombay, worked together to build a state-of-the-art arena, where parcels will be picked up and delivered at the correct locations by a robotic boat. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay released a statement, expressing their hope to motivate and encourage visitors to take up initiatives where technology can be used to ease the day-to-day operations.
The Design Innovation Centre is a centre sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) at the premier institute for engineering studies. The centre is focused on creatively developing and designing innovative solutions to real-world problems.
The team at DIC, with the help of several live case studies, were able to envision a design innovation methodology in 3 different interlinked segments. The components comprised of Chakku 7 Concerns (7Cs), sources state.
Professor Chakravarthy, IIT Bombay’s IDC School of Technology, heads the DIC centre. He has also been the Chair Professor at India Post and has also participated in different projects. Some of the projects include maintenance-free letterbox, easy to use Trolley for bag handling at Railway stations and easy to carry Postman Bag

Another MHRD-sponsored initiative at the IIT Bombay is the e-Yantra Lab, sponsored under the National Mission on Education through ICT programme. The e-Yantra Lab is an initiative by IIT Bombay, with the objective of developing next-generation embedded systems engineers. These engineers will inherit a practical outlook from the e-Yantra lab, in order to come up with real-life practical solutions to the issues faced in the world.

Professor Kavi Arya, a Computer Science professor at IIT Bombay, is responsible for conducting workshops and training through e-Yantra throughout India. The objective of the lab is to inspire and encourage students to take up a “path of innovation”.
