IIT Delhi to Launch 4-year Engineering Science Course
IIT Delhi to teach Engineering Science course soon. The course is expected to help students learn about engineering basics in the first year and choose a specialisation of their choice in the second.
The Indian Institute of Technology or IITs all over the country are now allowing students to change their engineering courses after they complete their first year. 10% of students from one stream who have cleared all the previous examinations, are academically sound and have no backlog are allowed to choose for changing their course.
The number of students who opt for branch change surpasses 10%. Students are keen to opt for the popular course of Computer Science and Engineering which gets overcrowded. The introduction of Engineering Science in the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi is expected to address the problem and it will inculcate the sense within students that all kinds of engineering streams are important before they decide to jump to one course from another after the first year.
The Director of IIT Delhi, V. Ramgopal Rao has said that the new engineering science course will take admission of students after Class XII. The target will be those students who still have not or not ready to get enrolled in any given specialisation. The course will be conducted by providing knowledge of all facets of the engineering sciences. He added that he wants to see students taking informed decisions in choosing a specialisation.
A committee which will consist of the Senate members will reportedly get formed soon in IIT Delhi for the Engineering Science course. The other IITs of the country will also introduce the course if the course sees success in IIT Delhi.
The director has pointed towards the importance of proper counselling and guidance to students in a national-level before they step into the engineering streams.
A major problem is the student’s mindset, the students who get high marks in JEE Advanced opt for computer science courses as it is more in demand despite their desire to study mechanical, civil or any other engineering courses. Rao explained that the students have traits to choose specialisations based on their parent’s or senior’s advice which is not a good practice because the parents can not understand some modern-day norms as their knowledge about specialisations and job market can be outdated.

The engineering science course in IIT Delhi will educate students about the different aspects of different fields and then from the second year, they will be allowed to choose the specialisation on their own after the completion of the first year.
