Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Taiwan, have signed a pact to launch a new joint PhD programme. IIT Delhi and NCTU had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 17th of May 2019. The students who will be enrolled under the programme will be asked to spend half of the duration of the programme at IIT Delhi and the second half of the programme at NCTU. As per the agreement, every student will be allotted two mentors, one from both the institutes.

The Dean of Research and Development IIT Delhi B R Mehta, said that the Institute has opened its doors to application forms for the programme. Once a candidate is selected at IIT Delhi, he/she will be able to choose the option of pursuing the programme under the partnership with NCTU. He added that once the candidate is selected, the process of assigning the mentors to the student will begin. The same rules apply to the students from NCTU who wish to pursue their PhD programme under the mentorship of professors from IIT Delhi: New Course in Engineering Science Offered by IIT Delhi

Sources state that students who get enrolled under this programme will be applicable for scholarships that will cover all the expenses related to their research as well as the expenses for international travel will be covered. Students who have selected their research topics that are industry-specific, the students will be offered further scholarships.

He further informed that there are no limitations to the areas of interest that candidates can choose for their research, however, he added that the students who have selected the research projects that are industry-specific will be given preference over other students for the selection of the PhD candidates, along with receiving additional scholarships to undertake their research. He added that the industry that NCTU and Taiwan keep their focus on is in the area of opto-electrics and semiconductors. Therefore, the students who have selected research topics in this area will stand a higher chance of being selected.
