IIT Delhi Likely to Establish a new Design Department
The new full fledged department will offer Bachelors and Masters programmes in the field of Design
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is taking a big step towards providing scope for students willing to pursue a career in the field of Design. In view of the same, IIT-D plans to set up a new full-fledged department on Design to bridge the gap between technical skills and aesthetics.

Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, recently revealed that the institute will be approaching the Human Resource Development division or the HRD Ministry to sanction the plan to set up the department. Further, the institute will be seeking approval from the Senate on the various programmes it aims to offer to the students. He also said that the department could admit about 300-400 students in the various undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

A separate entrance test may be introduced as a part of the admission criteria. Students with a non-science background will also be eligible to apply to these courses.
However, the entire plan is yet to be finalised.
At present, an exclusive design department is only present at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. Other IITs only offer some programmes on design.
Admission to Masters’ level programmes at IIT is conducted through the GATE entrance exam. Many students opt out the programme midway as GATE is also recognised as one the recruitment exams to land a job at the government agencies in India. A set process to rectify loopholes in the system is being worked upon according to reports.
