The pre-placement process at IIT Delhi has just begun. Giants like Wipro, IBM, Oracle and Samsung are expected to hire students of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi) during the campus placements which is all set to begin on December 1, 2017. Moreover, keeping pace with the year after year trend, these companies are expected to offer attractive packages of around Rs. 20 lakh per annum or more to the outgoing B.Tech batch of IIT-D.

So far, as per reports from the placement committee of IIT Delhi, more than 40 companies have already registered for the engineering campus placements 2017. Companies have initiated pre-placement talks with the candidates and CV verification process. Few companies have also conducted aptitude and general tests to shortlist candidates for the placement round scheduled for December 2017.

According to sources, IIT Delhi is likely to witness a reduction in the number of job opportunities offered in the IT sector. This reason for the same can be linked to an increase in the number of job opportunities offered by popular companies in the manufacturing sector. The same trend was prevalent even last year.

On Day 1 of IIT Delhi placements, companies from the IT sector are expected to hire software engineers, product developers and product engineers with coding knowledge. On the other hand, popular management firms like Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company and AT Kearney are expected to recruit data scientists and consultants. Interestingly, these roles will be also open to students of other branches of engineering as well.

Corporate giants like HSBC and Axis Bank have also registered with IIT Delhi. The placement process will pace up after October 22, 2017, when students return to campus after mid-term break. Software leaders like Google and Microsoft are also expected to hire students this year. Popular e-commerce company Flipkart is also expected to join the list of recruiters. IBM also will hire the students for machine learning role.

An electrical engineering student of IIT Delhi pointed that the number of companies participating in campus placements may reach 100 to 120 by the end of October. Students are evincing keen interest in obtaining necessary skills to secure jobs. Machine learning and VLSI Chip Design are the areas where more students are willing to acquire skills. Students are also taking up finance and marketing courses in MBA department to prepare for consultancy jobs.

According to the information given by students, IIT Delhi has not yet witnessed registration from start-ups for campus placements. Rubrik, a California-based company is the only attractive start-up on the list. Others such as Hopscotch, Portea Medical and Zomato were blacklisted from the placements last year as they withdrew the offers made and shattered the hopes of students.

After the AIPC removing the ban from a number of start-ups earlier last month, a specific day called ‘Start-Up Day’ will be organised during the placement season on either the fourth or fifth day of placements. The placement authorities have directed the students to conduct their own checks before accepting an offer from a start-up.

Some are of the opinion that start-ups will consider students from the non-IT background if they have skills in coding while software giants like Google and Microsoft will only hire students from the IT background. Start-ups will also hire students for non-core positions like business development.
