IIT Delhi & Samsung Together Bring IoT Lab to the Institute
An Internet of Things (IoT) laboratory has been inaugurated at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in partnership with Samsung.
An Internet of Things (IoT) laboratory has been inaugurated at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The lab has come up in partnership with Samsung. IIT Delhi and Samsung had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in August 2016, after it was conceptualised in the month of June 2016. All the devices and instruments required for the lab have been provided by Samsung.
In a press release, the director of IIT Delhi, Ramgopal Rao stated that the innovative platform was a suitable representation of IIT Delhi's thrust on cutting-edge research in collaboration with the industry.
The in-charge of the lab, Professor Brejesh Lall said that research on network architecture, embedded intelligence and sensor data processing will be carried out in the lab. Right now, 15 scholars are working in the lab, and out of these, 5 are doctoral students. Down the line, the lab is expected to be expanded with the addition of about 800 square feet area more enabling to accommodate a total of 30 researchers. If more funds are provided, the size of the lab will increase exponentially.
Internet of Things is the inter-networking of the physical devices, buildings, vehicles and other items embedded with electronics, sensors, software, network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data.

In 2013, it was defined as the infrastructure of the information society by Global Standards Initiative on Internet of Things. It allows objects to be controlled remotely in existing network of infrastructure, creates more opportunities for direct integration of the physical world with the computer-based systems. It results in accuracy and economic benefits, improves efficiency and minimises human intervention.
