As per a joint study conducted by Yes Institute and Assocham, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the University of Delhi (Delhi University) featured in the list of top 200 universities across the world. On the other hand, eight universities from Australia & China, 11 from Germany, 30 from UK (United Kingdom) and 49 from USA (United States of America) also featured in the list of top 200 universities. Apart from IITs and DU, no other Indian institute made it to the list of top 200.

Assocham figured out that many students from India rely on foreign countries for pursuing higher studies. Most of the Indian talent is going to developed countries for studying and research. Over 6,00,000 Indian students are pursuing higher studies abroad. Instead of coming back to India, these students are contributing intellectual capital as well as economic value to other countries. It is time for the Indian institutes to adopt the best practices of international institutes to regulate brain drain, pointed by Assocham.

According to Assocham, only a limited number of Indian graduates are considered employable. The National Employability Report (2013) clearly indicated that the employability rate in almost all job roles across education streams – arts, commerce and science is less than 25%. More internship opportunities must be offered to students to improve employability skills. The Indian government must boost the vocational education system to impart relevant skills in diverse fields, stated the report.

Assocham further pointed that India is capable of becoming a global hub of talent by 2030 because of its demographic advantage. If everything progresses as per plan, one in every four graduates in the world will be a product of Indian higher education system.
