IIT Director: Platforms Required to Cultivate Leadership Qualities in Students

Director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, Bhaskar Ramamurthi said that there is a need to instill leadership skills in engineering graduates. He also asked educational institutions to work in collaboration with forums that work to develop leadership qualities and set up platforms that will help in this task.

The director spoke at the launch of Tiruchi Cluster of PALS (Pan IIT Alumni Leadership Series) organized by the National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NIT-T) and said that there is a need to work on the leadership qualities of engineering students.

PALS was founded in 2012 and initially worked with the alumni of IIT- Madras to achieve the same objective. Various lectures were organized by PALS for the students of IIT-M to impart knowledge regarding leadership and technical inputs on various subjects. It is now a leading platform that motivates leaders and leadership skills.

The initiative is not strictly for students belonging to IITs and NITs. Other institutions are also welcome to participate.

Mr. Ramamurthi stressed on the every changing world of technology and said that what’s new in today’s world has become obsolete for others. He said that sometimes change is viewed as a threat to job security but instead it gives rise to new opportunities. He further said that there is a need for good leaders who could recognize these opportunities and deal with such changes with competence.

G. Kannabiran, Director in charge of NIT-T, said that NIT-T will operate as an anchor institute for the Tiruchi Cluster of PALS. All participating colleges and institutions will be able to benefit from the incubation center and laboratories of NIT-T, he added.

The Tiruchi Cluster is being looked upon as an opportunity for the alumni of IITs who are currently working in NIT to play a leading role in promoting the aim of PALS.

Chairman of PALS, Thiru Srinivasan informed that Jayaram College of Engineering and MAM College of Engineering in Tiruchi are the partnering institutions of this initiative.
