IIT Gandhinagar to Sign Pact with Indian Navy

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar is all set to sign a pact with the Indian Navy. The main objective of this pact is to develop indigenous technologies for sea warfare. Recently, IIT Gandhinagar also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Army for research and development. However, the pact with Indian Navy is not officially confirmed and the talks between IIT Gandhinagar and Indian Navy are in the primary stage. IIT Gandhinagar is hoping to sign MoU with Indian Navy in a week.

Director of IIT Gandhinagar, Dr. Sudhir Jain revealed that it is the first institute to help two defence forces including Army and Navy in conducting research. ‘Make Projects’ is an initiative of defence courses that come under ‘Make in India’ programme. The pact with Army and Navy wings will boost up the research output of IIT Gandhinagar.

An official of IIT Gandhinagar revealed that the Prime Minister of India has been insisting on developing indigenous research under ‘Make in India’ programme. India must develop its technologies without depending on foreign countries. On the other hand, India must not import articles from foreign countries if foreigners do not share technologies. The pact with Indian Navy will help in developing indigenous technologies, he mentioned.

In December 2016, IIT Gandhinagar signed a pact with Indian Army to set up a research cell that will play a significant role in identifying the problems faced by the Indian Army. The Indian Army will work with students and faculty through the research cell and figure out solutions for these problems.
