Witness Nature in Its Most Beautiful Form at the Campus of IIT Guwahati
The campus of IIT Guwahati is one of the greenest and environment-friendly college campuses in the country. The premier institute undertakes several initiatives to preserve the environment.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is moving forward as one of the top ten engineering institutes in India. It is transforming itself into a green campus with state of the art infrastructure and has an intake of over six thousand students. The premier institute revealed statistics and data which said that the buildings of IIT Guwahati occupy 31 percent of the whole campus and water bodies comprise 14 percent of it. The remaining campus of IIT Guwahati is under green cover which includes hillocks as well.
The campus of IIT Guwahati provides ts students and residents with fresh and clean air and lush green surroundings. The total area of IIT Guwahati’s campus is 704 acres and about 93 acres of it are covered by water bodies and lakes. Most of the open spaces of the campus have been turned into manicured lawns and well-maintained gardens through the plantation of trees of different species. Some unique and some common trees like Ashoka, cashew nut, Arjun, Areca Palm, Eucalyptus, Bakul, Foxtail Palm, Nahor, Krishnasura and Radhasura, Sissoo, many varieties of Bamboo and aquatic plants can be found at the campus of IIT Guwahati.

The Director of IIT Guwahati, T G Sitharam, expressed his views on the institute’s campus and said that it is truly blessed to have been set up amidst nature’s bounty and within close proximity of the Brahmaputra river. He said that the lush green surroundings of the campus include lakes, mountains, natural streams, orchids, forests, tea and medicinal gardens, botanical gardens, and all kinds of wildlife. The rich and varied green landscapes of IIT Guwahati continue to serve as a source of inspiration for developing and implementing green and sustainable technologies for coexisting and flourishing while taking up all the dynamic challenges that come in the way.
The campus is home to various winter and summer migratory as well as local birds. Many endangered and threatened birds can also be seen there. IIT Guwahati has a club called ‘Prakriti’ which comprises young environment enthusiasts and caters to the protection of environment and nature’s bounty. The members devise technological solutions for addressing the challenges that the environment faces and also for monitoring and conservation purposes.

IIT Guwahati, being one of the topmost technological institutions in the country, has a key role to play in fostering and maintaining the concept of sustainable green solutions. It sets an example for all the other institutes and colleges to follow the same pattern. At the institute level, IIT Guwahati takes up various green and clean initiatives like the usage of renewable energy across the campus, vermicomposting, rainwater harvesting, recycling, waste segregation, plastic-free initiatives, etc.
