The researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has found groundbreaking information on carcinogenic cells that cause the spread of breast cancer. This latest finding will be proved very helpful for oncologists in developing a treatment strategy for the kinds of cancers that are drug-resistant and damage various parts of the body. The research is an interdisciplinary investigation that involves researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. The findings by these researchers will have help in enriching the hunt taken up by the oncologists and scientists to cure cancer by developing cutting edge cancer therapeutics. The team of researchers fabricated a microchannel that mimicked the microvascular human body environment. They performed the experiment in the microchannel.

While talking about the experiment, professor Siddhartha Sankar Ghosh of IIT Guwahati said that although the experiment was conducted on breast cancer, colon, lung and oral cancers can also be cured with the help of experimental models that are on similar lines as the breast cancer model evolved by their team of researchers. The professor further added that the widespread drug-resistant breast cancer has been emerging as a global challenge. So, the goal is to holistically comprehend the origin of metastatic cancer. The experiment will provide information to develop improved treatment strategies in the near future.

Treating cancer spreading or migratory EMT (Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition) cells has been a big challenge for oncologists and scientists. This interdisciplinary research can be proved a breakthrough for treating drug-resistant EMT cells consequently, changing the Pharmaceutical industry.
