IIT-Hyderabad faculty Conducts Study on Long Lasting Roads

IIT- Hyderabad faculty and researchers have come up with models and computational simulation studies. These models and computational simulation studies can predict the performance of roads, pavements and road surfaces. The IIT-H faculty and researchers work has been published in the Journal of Transport Engineering.

According to the reports, India has the 2nd largest road network across the world after the United States of America. There are about 1,000 people in the 4.37 km of roads in India.

Prof. Sireesh Sairde, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT-H said that the pavements in India are complex and the structures and are influenced by various factors such as climate, material properties, construction practices etc. Therefore, transportation agencies require new and innovative techniques from time to time to take into account the variabilities.

The IIT-H team including Dr Sairde, Associate Professor Dr B Munwar Basha, PRT Pranav, Research Scholar, IIT-Hyderabad made use of RBDO to measure the safety of pavement structures. The modelling study conducted by the team suggested that the bituminous layer’s thickness is one of the key factors for fatigue failure. Once the study was complete, it was compared with the AASHTO-American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials data for the design of pavements.
