IIT Hyderabad Incubation StartUp BeAble Wins Rs. 25 lakhs in IIGP 2.0

The incubation startup of IIT Hyderabad, BeAble, won the Open Innovation Challenge 2019 and received a funding of Rs. 25 lakhs. The challenge was held by the India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP) 2.0.

A startup incubated by the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) has won an amount of Rs. 25 lakhs in funding. The India Innovation Growth Programme 2.0 (abbreviated as IIGP) had hosted the ‘Open Innovation Challenge 2019’ in which BeAble, the incubated startup of IIT Hyderabad, received this funding.

BeAble is a spinoff of the very first batch of Fellowship in Healthcare Entrepreneurship that was started at the Centre for Healthcare Entrepreneurship (which is abbreviated as CfHE) of IIT Hyderabad. BeAble works in the convergence of technology and good design for rehabilitating stroke patients.

More than 16,000 applications were received for the Open Innovation Challenge 2019 od IIGP 2.0 from all over India. BeAble Health was shortlisted as one of the winners and was hence awarded a seed grant of Rs. 25 lakhs so that its scale-up operations and market penetration could be given support. This news was released in a statement that was given by IIT Hyderabad.

The Indian Innovation Growth Programme 2.0 is a tripartite initiative taken together by Tata Trusts, Lockheed Martin (an American global defence manufacturer), and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India. It seeks innovators who are capable of thinking out of the box and hence taking the story of India’s development into the future.

Renu John, who is the Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad and also the Co-Head of the Centre for Healthcare Entrepreneurship (CfHE), congratulated BeAble on its victory and said that CfHE is focused completely on enhancing the level of healthcare innovation in India. BeAble is an example of the innovative initiatives undertaken by CfHE which is on its way to make a positive impact on the entire Indian healthcare sector. Renu John also said that IIT Hyderabad looks forward to getting opportunities of incubating many more successful startups via CfHE.

The first product of BeAble is called ‘ArmAble’ and it is made keeping in mind the pressing need for an engaging, intensive, and regular rehabilitation therapy for the upper limb. It is created for conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Fracture, Frozen Shoulder, Traumatic Brain Injury, etc.
