IIT Hyderabad Research Team Created Collagen with Waste Eel Skin

IIT Hyderabad researchers invented Collagen form Eel skin wastes that can further be used as disease-free collagen by the tissue engineers for stem cell research and development. Eel skin Collagen is a cost-efficient and disease-free replacement of the animal-derived collagen.

A research team of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad has successfully derived collagen from the waste eel skin of the fish bodies. It was observed that the tissue structure made using such collagen performed well and supported the proliferation of stem cells. Due to the great performance and practical application of this experiment, eel skin-derived collagen can replace the animal-derived collagen.

The object of the IIT Hyderabad research team was to utilize the marine discards to produce something valuable if this research result is implemented on a large scale, the discards of eel skin would be used to produce collagen, increasing the bioeconomic growth of India. Also, the researchers are in favour of promoting the establishment of alternate industries that converts wastes into useful products.

The work of Research Team has been published in a famous journal - Cleaner Production and the same has been praised by many. Mr. Uday Kiran Roopavath, Research Scholar IIT-H, Dr. Subha Narayan Rath, AP, IIT-H, and Dr. Mano Govindharaj led the research. While explaining the research objectives, Dr. Mano Govindharaj, described the idea of blue biotechnology, the term ‘blue’ represents the aquaculture, coastal and marine sciences, and their invention is going to take blue biotechnology and tissue engineering to greater heights.

The properties of collagen scaffolds like low immunogenicity, permeability, biocompatibility, and immunogenicity make it important for tissue engineering. Usually, collagen is derived from animal skin and bones, for example, Bovine Skin, Porcine Skin or Rat Tail but these sources also spread diseases and problems like - mad-cow. But with the invention of eel skin collagen, all these problems can be avoided by the tissue engineers.

Thus, this research is a great invention for tissue engineers and can become a promising replacement of aminal derived collagen that is not only free from pathological diseases but also, inexpensive as it is derived from the marine wastes.
