IIT Kanpur Plans to Set Up Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur may venture into the field of medicine by setting up a medical college as well as a Super-Speciality Hospital. This is an attempt of IIT-K to further its own research in the field of bioengineering and bioscience.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, a premier institute for education in technical courses will be venturing into the field of medicine. The sources state that IIT Kanpur will be investing in specialised medical education as well as establishing a super-speciality hospital along with a medical college. They add that the institute has taken the step to help boost the research work in the field of bioengineering and bioscience. This will further act as a cross between engineering and medicine.
As per the statements that have been released by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, the proposal for the medical college as well as the super-speciality Hospital has been approved by the Board at IIT-K. Statements made by the officials at the Institute mention that the Detailed Project Report is currently underway and in the process of being completed for the approval from the Ministry of Human Resources Development. The setting up of the medical college, as well as the Super-speciality hospital, will cost the Institute a whopping ₹800 crores to complete. They added that the campus will be set up in a 20-acre plot near the engineering institute itself at Shivli.

The Director of IIT Kanpur Abhay Karandikar announced the project is currently on the proposal stage. He added that the project will move forward, depending on the Detail Project Report or DPR has been made by the committee. The committee, formed by Karandikar, is headed by the dean of Research and Development S Ganesh, who will be supervising during the implementation of the proposal. The committee is a member team headed by S Ganesh along with Amitabh Bandopadhyay, Onkar Dixit, Sandeep Varma and Pradeep. The team of 5 have been advised to formulate the DPR with the help of experts from TATA Trusts.

Sources state that after the Detailed Project Report has been submitted to the Union Government, they plan to begin the work immediately after they receive the green light from the government. Sources added that the students at IIT Kanpur will be among the first to be able to not only receive technical education, they will also be able to carry out research work in various fatal diseases under the guidance of medical experts.
