IIT Kanpur Collaborates with Ericsson to Combat Pollution
An MoU has been signed between IIT Kanpur and Ericsson India for fighting the pollution levels in Delhi. The two bodies will work collaboratively to deploy sensors in various locations in order to combat the problem of pollution in the national capital.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ericsson to deploy a sensor network based on NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things). This sensor network is aimed at monitoring air pollution in Delhi.
As a part of the MoU. Ericsson will use air quality sensors that are locally developed and are capable of sharing environmental data which includes the levels of PM1, PM 2.5, as well as PM10 at defined time intervals. This will prove to be helpful in leading to a better way of monitoring and analysis of data that is collected from different parts of the city. The findings of these analyses will be shared on a periodic basis with the local authorities and other key stakeholders.

The alliance of these two bodies is also going to include working with some community-based organisations in order to raise awareness about air pollution and regarding steps that can be taken to reduce it.
The Head of Ericsson India, Nitin Bansal, said that it is an urgent need to address the levels of air pollution in Delhi. This issue needs to be tracked and dealt with on a regular and continuous basis. He added that the NB-IoT based sensors are going to be deployed at various strategic locations in the capital and the entire venture will be done in partnership with IIT Kanpur.

Bansal further explained that the sensors are automated and they will relay information on certain defined time intervals. The information recorded by them will be used to analyse data on pollution levels, its sources, and the locations that are most polluted. The entire process of deploying sensors based on NB-IoT will be done in a sustainable way and will be cost-efficient.
