IIT Kharagpur and AIIMS to Collaborate for Joint Academic & Research Initiatives

IIT Kharagpur and AIIMS will soon collaborate for taking up joint initiatives in academics and research, including a super speciality hospital. For this purpose, senior faculty of both the institutes are in discussion to collaborate and take the initiatives forward. The major purpose of this collaboration is to take technology-enabled healthcare directly to people and open new directions in education.
Through this collaboration, IIT Kharagpur is looking forward to strengthening ongoing education and research activities. The collaboration will play a dominant role in analysing the hospital data.

Head of School of Medical Science and Technology at IIT Kharagpur, Professor Suman Chakraborty revealed that AIIMS and IIT Kharagpur are bestowed with unique strengths. The collaboration between these two premier institutes will explore these unique strengths and facilitate the exchange of ideas. IIT Kharagpur has expertise in developing diagnostics and medical devices, machine learning and big data analysis, medical imaging & analysis and systems modelling, he added.
The collaboration will enable IIT Kharagpur to put its expertise in medical science to develop, as well as, improve technology-centric medical services.
Commenting on the collaboration, Director of AIIMS Delhi, Professor Randeep Guleria pointed that the medical technology in the 21st century is becoming technology intensive. Analytics, simulation and modelling will be essential tools for medical intervention in future, he highlighted.

AIIMS and IIT Kharagpur will also encourage medical practitioners to engage themselves in research. The collaboration is a great opportunity for the outstanding researchers and professors of both institutes to work on different clinical problems. At present, there is a need to decentralise the patient load on super speciality hospitals like AIIMS through technology-driven initiatives in primary health care.
The super speciality hospital at IIT Kharagpur is expected to start functioning this year.
