IIT Kharagpur Launches New Centre for Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

- The blueprint of the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies was prepared after an initial meeting at IIT Kharagpur last year.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Government of India, launched the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp). For setting up the centre of excellence, the Department of Heavy Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IIT Kharagpur on November 8, 2017. The MoU was officially signed in the present of Babul Supriyo – Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

An official associated with the centre revealed that the need for the Centre in Advanced Technologies had been felt for decades, as international manufacturers of capital goods export their products to India for higher profitability rather than establishing manufacturing centres in India. The current scenario led to the transfer of lower levels technology. A proposal to set up state-of-the-art centre on advanced manufacturing technologies in the eastern part of India has been pending over the past few years, he added.

Babul Supriyo indicated that IIT Kharagpur would be the best choice to carry out research in advanced manufacturing technologies.
Director of IIT Kharagpur, Professor Chakrabarti the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies would lay a strong focus on technologies that will usher India into the emerging era of Industry 4.0. Furthermore, the major objective of the Centre will bridge the gap between the requirements of manufacturing firms and role of SME’s in meeting those requirements in globally competitive terms, he added.
