IIT Kharagpur's DHI Centre to Revolutionise Manufacturing Sector
The Department of Heavy Industries at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur just passed through a review meeting comprising of officials from the department, stakeholders of the institute, government officials as well as the industry partners. They state the projects are on the right track.
During the launch of the Department of Heavy Industries in the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-K), the varsity had planned to revolutionise the manufacturing industry in today’s world. Almost two years after the launch of the department, IIT Kharagpur is finally on the track to materialise the change that it sought after.
Recently, a joint committee, which included the stakeholders of IIT Kharagpur along with few officials from the Department of Heavy Industries, Govt. of India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Entreprises as well as partner industries, came together and conducted a review meeting of all the projects that have been undertaken by the Institute, which revealed that the projects that have been undertaken by the institute are moving on the right track.
The areas where the Indian Institute of Technology are working upon include setting up of a facility of 3D metal additive manufacturing, developing contemporary innovative materials, process criteria/processes for additive manufacturing, fully automated monitoring system for shop-floors and many more. Sources state that the industry partners, as well as DHI, have been satisfied with the performance of the department.

DHI’s Sanjay Chavre stated that the department is focused on developing “cutting-edge Technologies”, for instance, the Internet of Things and Additive Manufacturing. Sources also state that the introduction of the department has resulted in a win-win situation for both the parties that are involved, i.e. the academic community as well as the industry. Some of the partnerships that have been made between the industry and the institute include TATA Steel, HEC Ranchi and TATA Sons among many other industry giants.

The professor in charge at the Centre, Prof Surjya K Pal stated that the University will be introducing short-term programmes in the area of Composite 4.0, Industry 4.0, Advanced Welding Techniques CNC Training as well as Additive manufacturing. As part of the curriculum for the short-term programmes, the industry experts as well as academicians.
