IIT Kharagpur and Edinburgh University Conduct Workshop to Address Water Crisis
IT Kharagpur and the University of Edinburgh (UoE) jointly organised a workshop on rural water quality and management at the IIT campus. The workshop provided the participants with an insight into the ongoing water crisis in Rural India.
A joint workshop was organised by IIT-KGP and University of Edinburgh to address the problem of the water crisis. The workshop was financed by the UK Global Challenges Research Fund. It gave participants insights into rural water issues in India. In order to resolve the water crisis, scientists, engineers, social scientists and industry experts from India and abroad came together to discuss the matter. The discussions led to the development of five projects, where technology and nature were considered.
The project will make use of IIT-KGP's interdisciplinary expertise, UoE among others. Meanwhile, it will also involve the local institutions, community-based organisations and government officials in the project. The common perspective of any such project is to include the local hydrogeology, cultural practices of the villages and socio-economic circumstances.
Prof. Pulak Mishra, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Kharagpur said that the main aim of the joint International Workshop was to promote new collaborative projects in areas such as water quality, water management, wastewater management, water contamination, energy water supply, water, and ecosystems.

The collaboration of these institutions will play an important role in the delivery of solutions designed for major grounded water crisis initiatives. The major perspective of these projects is to implement the workshop with the cultural practices of the villages while incorporating local hydro-geology and the social and economic circumstances of the village. The final statement, on the other hand, will detail water issues, model study plan, water system response, data analysis, hydrological environment, and more.
