IIT Kharagpur Launches Young Innovators Programme for School Students
- Ideating and figuring out new solutions to technological challenges that are being faced by the world currently will be one of the major objectives of this initiative.

A bunch of students from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) have launched a pan India competition on technology ideation for young innovators, particularly from schools. The programme has been named as Young Innovators Programme (YIP) which will be a platform to encourage the young minds belonging to Classes 8 to 10 with a scientific quest. The programme, in turn, inspires the students to ideate or figure out new solutions to technological challenges that are being faced by the world currently.
The competition will have three rounds which will cover key areas such as biotechnology, project designing, hardware modelling, environment, energy, agriculture and food sciences. IIT Kharagpur had already received proposals from 250 teams comprising 600 students from across the country. Out of them, 60 teams have been shortlisted for the second round. The selection was based on the concept note of the project prepared that was submitted by the students.

The second round of the competition is underway, the selection for which is based on the presentation of detailed project synopsis by students. The final round is scheduled to take place on October 4, 2017, at IIT Kharagpur.
Debanjan Nayak, a 4th-year student at IIT Kharagpur expressed that he was surprised to see the way students have used their scientific knowledge to apply to real-life problems. Students have come up with various technological propositions including a device for persons with disabilities, horticulture treatment of sewage, agricultural drone, automatic pen and drying-agent cooler for CFC commission, he added.

The teams which will be selected in the final round will get a unique opportunity to present their projects in front of renowned and distinguished researchers from among the alumni and faculty of IIT Kharagpur. The finalists will prepare a model or replica to demonstrate their ideas and solutions for the challenge or problem. The teams that come up with an exceptional idea and solution will be awarded attractive prizes.
