IIT Kharagpur Soon to Become the First IIT to Offer MBBS from 2021
IIT Kharagpur is all set to roll out its first MBBS programme from the academic year of 2021. In its first phase, the programme will be an open window of admission for 50 students. Read the full story to know more.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur that is considered as one of the premier engineering and technology institutes will soon be rolling out its first MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) programme from the academic year of 2021.
Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Science and Research, the super speciality hospital of the technical institute will begin operating its outdoor patient department this year. As soon as this begins, IIT Kharagpur will launch the MBBS programme for 2021 academic year.

Key Features of MBBS Course at IIT Kharagpur
In the first phase of the MBBS programme at IIT Kharagpur, 50 students will be admitted, making it the first IIT to offer an undergraduate medical course.
The curriculum of the programme will be as per the guidelines of MCI (Medical Council of India).
With the increment in the hospital beds to 750 beds in the second phase of the programme, the number of seats will also be scaled up to 100.
While the academic affairs of the programme are going to be managed by the institute, the day-to-day hospital management will be taken care of by a special purpose vehicle running under the Section 8 of the companies Act of 2013.
To make this programme a success, IIT Kharagpur has formed collaborations with Tata Medical Center, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and South Eastern Railway Hospital.

The Board of Directors of the IIT Kharagpur’s super speciality hospital will include senior faculty of the institute. The hospital would be catering to a huge community who are not able to access health care benefits due to affordability or distance. 10 per cent of the total hospital beds would be free of cost, whereas, 65 per cent of them would be charged according to the state and central healthcare insurance schemes.
