IIT Kharagpur to Start Elective Course on Stainless Steel
IIT Kharagpur will soon be launching a 3-credit course in stainless steel and advanced ferrous alloys in partnership with Jindal Stainless. The course will be taught under the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The course is expected to begin from the new academic year in July.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has joined hands with the largest manufacturer of stainless steel, Jindal Stainless so as to introduce a 3-credit course that will focus on stainless steel and advanced ferrous alloys. The course will be taught in both the curricula of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes under the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. It is expected that the course may begin from the month of July.
Under the new course, the students will be taught various topics such as studying stainless steel along with the uniqueness of the different grades of steel that can be made. Other topics such as the forming and behavioural characteristics of steel, determining the life-cycle cost of steel, and understanding the entire spectrum of the applications of steel will also be taught in the classes. Light will also be shed upon the topic of advanced ferrous alloys.
Rahul Mitra, the head of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering as well as School of Nano-Science and Technology at IIT Kharagpur had stated that the Senate at IIT Kharagpur has approved of the new course that is being introduced. He also adds that the course will also focus on studying the various facets of stainless steel and ferrous alloys.

Along with teaching the students the various facets of stainless steel and advanced ferrous alloys, sources say that students will also be given exposure to how the stainless steel is fabricated and manufactured. They will be provided visits to the various manufacturing units of stainless steel in Pathredi and Hisar in the state of Haryana. The course will be taught to the students for a duration of four months with three classes being conducted every week.

Stainless steel is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after metals in the world for the manufacturing of many other materials. The course has been aimed at helping graduate students discover different professional avenues.
