IIT Kanpur Student Designs App to Make Smartphone Use Easier for the Elderly
One of the CEED Toppers 2015, Shashank Arya won a silver medal in the Uxplorer 2016 Pune.
‘Glass launcher’ is an application which won a silver medal in the competition-Uxplorer 2016, but a 'gold medal' for making technology friendly for everyone - even the elderly. This 2nd place winner app was designed by Shashank Arya who is an Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur student. The competition took place on 9th September’ 16 in Pune and was organised by YUJ Design which is a design agency in Pune. The glass launcher app makes the smartphones simple enough for elderly use.

Following are the functions of the app:
- The app completely redesigns the keypad of the phone.
- It also redesigns the icons along with user interface.
- It simplifies the keypad and turns it into a non-QWERTY which is the ‘abc’ keypad that the elderly are more familiar with.
- It also changes the colour tone of the screen to green which makes it comfortable for people who are colour blind.

Shashank Arya said that the application took almost 4 months for design, research and testing. He also said that he is currently working on an app which will counsel students so they can choose the best career for themselves.
