IIT Kharagpur to Help Communities to Secure GI Tags for Crafts
The institute is also planning to file GI for ‘Kangri’, a basket which is used traditionally by the people of Kashmir.
In order to protect indigenous art forms and commercial products which are restricted to a particular area like ‘Kangri’ of Kashmir, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur will help these communities to get Geographical Indication for their products. The institute will also widen the scope of the market for their products.

The Director of the institute, Mr. Chakrabarti said that they are going to identify 100 such products all over the country and help the communities to get GI tags for their products.
Recently, the Intellectual Property Cell of the institute has taken up to facilitate the process of filing GI for ‘Goyna Bori’. It is a fine art which is used to create exquisite designs. The designs are made with the help of lentil paste mix. The fine art had its origin in Midnapore, West Bengal. It is a unique piece of fine art which gives a great appeal to the eye. Even Rabindranath Tagore had mentioned about this fine art in his works.

The institute is also planning to file GI for ‘Kangri’, a basket which is used traditionally by the people of Kashmir. People use it to keep warm themselves by burning charcoals in it. The director mentioned that they have already spoken to the patent office to provide GI tag. Once the product gets GI tag, the institute will help to build an economy around it.
