Reacting to a wave of student protests that rocked the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) campus recently, the administration has decided to slash the suggested rise in registration fee by half for Masters in Engineering (M. Tech) and Doctorate (Ph. D) programmes.
This milestone decision was taken after about 300 students surrounded & protested in front of the administration building of IIT-KGP. It is reported that during this coup-like situation, the students had held hostage, institute Director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti and several other officials.

Following this incident, the Dean of Students Affairs, the Dean of UG and the Dean of PG reevaluated the proposal and made the following suggestions:
Revision in Hall Establishment Charge:

| Proposed Hall Establishment Charge: | Rs. 15,200 per semester |
| Revised Hall Establishment Charge: | Rs. 12,500 per semester |
