IIT Kharagpur, University of Rochester and ICTS Bangalore to Develop Futuristic Technology
- Professor Sajal's research in the area of possibilities for developing quantum devices has been termed as path-breaking by IIT Kharagpur.

A research work by a faculty member of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has paved way for futuristic technology development. Professor Sajal Dhara of the Department of Physics, IIT Kharagpur collaborated with ICTS Bangalore and the University of Rochester to find out possibilities for developing quantum devices. With the help of the two institutes, Professor Sajal also discovered negative mass particles of polaritons that comprise half-matter and half-light.
IIT Kharagpur termed the research work of Professor Sajal as path-breaking, as it will lead to the development of futuristic technology.

Professor Sajal’s collaboration with ICTS Bangalore and the University of Rochester helped in presenting new insights on the mass of such particles that will lead to a giant leap towards the development of futuristic technology. According to the outcome of research work, Professor Sajal figured out that mass of such polaritons thus generated is lighter than the mass of an electron by a minimal factoring of 0.00001. The magnificent research work of Professor Sajal was featured in prestigious journal ‘Nature Physics’ in October 2017.
Through this research work, scientists can create a combined particle state artificially, which is made of half-matter and half-light. Light is an electromagnetic wave and it also exhibits particle properties with zero mass. Similarly, matters are made of atoms with a specific mass. The area of research chosen by Professor Sajal is highly promising for the development of future generation technologies at room temperature.

Professor Sajal Dhara has been able to complete his research with the substantial funding from Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) and International Society of Invertebrate Reproduction and Development (ISIRD). The funding helped Professor Sajal to develop lab facilities at IIT Kharagpur.
