IIT Madras & ABB India to Develop Multi Village Microgrid Models

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and ABB India will collaborate to develop a power management system to strengthen UDAY scheme. The main objective of the collaboration is to optimise the operation of multiple microgrids with and without grid connection. It would facilitate the management of electric supply to villages.
The collaboration will also enable the integration of individual solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftops to a village microgrid. Currently, the government is looking at a generation capacity of 40 GW in the coming five years. The generation of electricity would be done through grid connection rooftop solar PV and small-scale solar PV plants.

These clusters will have the capacity of generating and using renewable energy locally from one kilowatt to a few hundred kilowatts. The clusters will facilitate the users with optimal usage of renewable power by considering dynamic supply/demand situation.
Such interleaving and interconnection of microgrids with infrastructure and existing distribution system would provide economic benefits to the people in terms of reduced outages and lower cost of power.

Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme will foster greater corporate-academia partnerships which would contribute towards solving of country’s issues. Sanjeev Sharma, CEO of ABB India said that IIT-Madras and ABB would make the collaboration fruitful.
He further added that it is significant to design models of integration with power management and load balancing for proven microgrids technology with the existing grid infrastructure.
