To Promote “Green Living”, ‘Best of Waste’ Programme and ‘Organic Farmer’s Market’ Hosted by IIT Madras
Organic Farmer's Association in association with Citizen Consumers and Civic Action Group organised the event to promote sustainable a sustainable lifestyle in future.
To promote “Green Living”, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras hosted a “Best from Waste” programme and “Organic Farmer’s Market” within its campus on 08th March 2020. In the “Best of Waste” programme, an exhibition of innovative ‘Upcycled and Recycled’ was one of the main features. In the Organic Farmer’s Market the sale of organically-grown clothes and provisions featured among various items. The Organic Farmer’s Market and Citizen Consumers & Civic Action Group jointly conducted the event.
Featuring at the “Best of Waste” stall were various things like copper utensils, wooden notebooks, plastic-free toys, clothe diapers/pads etc. Both the “Organic Farmer’s Market” and “Best from Waste” was held at the IIT-M Ladies Club.
According to IIT Madras Registrar Dr Jane Prasad, the objective of the initiative was to educate the campus residents and students about the importance of adopting a lifestyle which is eco-friendly for a sustainable future and the harm of using plastic products. This was the first time an on-campus event of such magnitude was hosted by IIT Madras.

In the ‘Organic Farmer’s Market’, products, a variety of locally-grown products like sweeteners, oils, pulses, spices, cereals, rice etc were for sale, according to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences Professor V R Muraleedharan. To avoid the use of plastic bags, the attendees were advised to bring their own containers and carry bags.
Similar other steps have been taken by the IIT-M like Sewage Treatment Plant, waste segregation etc to build an ecologically responsible campus.

The “Use and Throw” plastic products are completely banned within the IIT Madras premises. The IIT-M campus is a “Plastic Free” campus and a lot of emphases is placed on the use of eco-friendly products by the Institute management.
