IIT Madras Hosts 55th Convocation, 2,267 Degrees Awarded
- IIT Madras celebrated its 55th convocation ceremony on July 20, 2018. As a part of the customary tradition, graduating students took a pledge after receiving their degrees.
The grand event of IIT Madras, its 55th convocation ceremony took place in a grand manner on July 20, 2018. Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, Dr. Rajiv Kumar graced the convocation ceremony as Chief Guest. Chairperson of IIT Madras, Dr. Pawan Goenka was also present on the occasion. As a part of the customary tradition, graduating students took a pledge after receiving their degrees. Director of IIT Madras awarded degrees to students this year.
Addressing the students, IIT Madras Director, Professor Ramamurthi expressed that the premier institute bagged the first rank in NIRF Rankings (Engineering Institutes Category) for the third consecutive year. Similarly, IIT Madras retained its second position for overall performance among all universities in India. He thanked faculty, staff and students for maintaining outstanding academic standards.

Detailing about IIT Madras’s international (foreign) collaborations, Professor Ramamurthi explained that the premier institute launched four new JDP (Joint Doctorate Programmes) with Nanyang Technological University – Singapore, Heidelberg University – Germany, Ecole Centrale De Nantes – France and National Chiao Tung University (NTU) – Taiwan. Among the four MoUs, the agreement with NTU Taiwan was signed during the PM of India Narendra Modi’s visit to NTU in June 2018. The total number of MoUs signed by IIT Madras with international universities has gone up to 243, he highlighted.
Highlighting the importance of technology, IIT Madras Chairperson, Dr. Pawan Goenka pointed out that the biggest disruption happening in the modern times is the democratisation of technology. He hailed IIT Madras Research Park initiatives in supporting the start-ups and ideas of fresh graduates. Technology is the backbone of inclusive growth across socio-economic strata and industries, he added.
