IIT Madras Builds India's 1st Spine Surgery Robot for Affordable and Painless Surgeries
IIT Madras researchers have created India's first 'Spine Surgery Robot,' for open spine surgeries that are affordable and less painful. The Spine Surgery Robot will make reduce the procedure time and also reduce the hospital stay.
IIT Madras researchers have created a Spine Surgery Robot which for open spine surgeries. It will make the process more affordable and less painful. It is an image-guided robotic system whose aim is to make the entire procedure less painful.
About India's First Spine Surgery Robot
HRD Ministry funded the project to create countries first robotic system for spinal surgeries. The aim to design such a robot is to make surgeries less painful and affordable for everyone. Not only this, the Spine Surgery Robot will reduce the procedure time, reduce hospital stay and will also reduce the recovery time for the patient.
The project was headed by Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, IIT Madras Professor. He informed that the Spine Surgery Robot will increase the safety of the procedure and will also reduce the surgeon's radiation exposure. The product will provide intra-operative guidance which is a position tracker.

He further informed that a calibration step will be performed for the external tracker. The step will align the world coordinate to robot coordinate and to the 3D model. Once the calibration is done, any movement of the external tracker can be extrapolated on to the 3D Model and the surgery plan.
It is not for the first time that robots are being used to perform surgeries. However, it is very first surgery robot created in India for working on a spine. The Spine Surgery Robot is one of the groundbreaking research as it will make the surgeries painless and affordable which is usually not the case. As spine surgeries are one of the most expensive and painful.
