IIT Madras Signs MoU with STL for 5G Advancements in India
The MoU was signed in the presence of STL CHRO, Professor R. David Koilpillai, IIT Madras Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Group CTO, International and Alumni Relations Dean Mahesh Panchagnula, Ms Anjali Byce.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and STL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to sponsor a Chair Professorship in 5G. STL is a global data network that has partnered up with the institute for developments in 5G communications technology.
The chair will be occupied by a full-time faculty of the institute, A review and selection process will be executed to select the occupant whose name will be announced in the first quarter of 2020.
He/she will be responsible to speed up the 5G advancements by bringing together STL's industry expertise and IIT Madras' research and knowledge.

Dr Badri Gomatam commented that STL always leads the way to introduce end-to-end connectivity. Now is the time for 5G connectivity and we have to make the most of it. The partnership will help both STL and IIT Madras realise the potential of 5G for the Indian and the global market.
Expressing appreciation to the Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL), Professor David Koilpillai said that the Chair will be significant for extensive research in Communications Technologies under the Department of Electrical Engineering.

This development will help in introducing young talent in the 5G domain and increasing innovation. It will also introduce unique opportunities.
5G is the next step with faster speeds and a wider range. Although it is still growing, more affordable and efficient standards are required to be introduced.
