IIT Madras Researchers Sets Benchmark, Develops Multimodal Robot
IIT Madras researchers have developed a Multimodal Robotic System- GraspMan with good grasping, manipulation and locomotion abilities for industrial and field application.
A multi-modal robotic system has been developed by a team of IIT Madras Researchers. The model has features of good grasping, locomotion eligibilities and high level of manipulation skill and will be used in industrial and field applications. The model is called ‘GraspMan’ and is a robot consisting of graspers, which grasps the geometry of any object that it holds. This results in a secure holding of objects and analysing it, just like any human hand would do. The researchers have ensured that the capabilities of the hands of the GraspMan be designed in a way that they must be in sync with the capabilities of a human hand and that it caters to objects of various sizes and shapes.
The robot has been designed to solve tasks that are able to navigate across environments, making sure that no complexity increases in the process. Prof Asokan Thondiyath who is a Professor in Robotics Laboratory in the Department of Engineering Design in IIT Madras, lead this prestigeous research. He was accompanied by his student Mr Nagamanikandan Govindan.

IIT Madras GraspMan Applications
For those who are interested, an archetype of the robot is installed at the Laboratory of Robotics, in IIT Madras. It has been designed to solve tasks that are able to navigate across environments, making sure that no complexity increases in the process. Some of the important aspects of the GraspMan are as follows:
- The robot also adapts according to behaviours and also has the capability to change itself as per the environment.
- There are multiple applications of GraspMan in the industrial world as it can be used for inspection, climbing and holding.
- The robot will also support the machines used in the operations of search and rescue.
The findings of the research will provide details of kinematic and static analysis. It further studies the fabricated prototype in order to authenticate different forms of operation. The combination of locomotion and manipulation makes the GraspMan all the more interesting.
