IIT Madras to Set Up National Facility for Cancer Genomics
IIT Madras is all set to establish a National Facility on Cancer Genomics for the Indian Population in order to find the biomarkers of cancer found in the bodies of Indian Patients. The venture is backed by the Indian Council for Medical Research and other government alliances.
Indian Institue of Technology - Madras has come up with a new project that is to set up a National Facility for Cancer Genomics centric to the Indian Patients. The main objective of this venture is to further study the biomarkers of cancer cells in the body of an Indian Cancer sufferer. Identification of cancer cells will help the researchers to facilitate a cure for the same.
According to the IIT Madras officials this project has been a collaboration of three different bodies that are:
- Indian Council for Medical Research
- Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry
- National Cancer Tissue Biobank

Early detection of cancer biomarkers in Indian patients so that they can be cured before its too late.
To enable the doctors and researchers to find a solution to cure the disease.
- The lifestyle of Indian cancer patients and their genetic variations would be kept in account while researching.
Hospitals of Chennai and Puducherry have signed MoUs with the National Cancer Tissue Biobank to collect and provide samples of cancer tissues to the IIT-M researchers. Hospitals will be taking consent from the patients while doing this activity and also take clearance by the Institutional Ethical Committee of IIT M.
As per the reports, more than 3,000 patients have agreed upon submitting their cancer tissues to the Biobank for further study. Theses samples are kept under special conditions to maintain their structure, for now, they have been stored in liquid nitrogen.

Presently, the advance treatment of cancer was done mainly in foreign countries, which was not affordable for the majority of cancer sufferers in the Indian subcontinent. This Research will enable patients to get rid of cancer at a much affordable cost provided everything goes right.
